We average about $80 a week for 2. Sometimes more (like visitation weekends), sometimes less. We plan our meals and use a list. It's too easy to blow a budget without a list and a plan. There are several dishes we like a lot that are easy to make in larger batches for multiple days - makes life easier to cook once and eat two or three times.

My only question is did the American family use food stamps to purchase the majority of that food?
We've noticed that when a family has a cart loaded and mounded over full of junk and all brand names, steaks, etc. that they will be pulling out a cardinal card to pay for it (at least around here anyhow).
We on the other hand prefer generics on most items, and shop for deals by how much things cost per ounce, etc. Much of that stuff is exactly the same as the brand names (some of it - not all )
Money can go a long way when shopping smart.
You see all that fast food in the front of the American family?
Pizza, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Burger King...

I am so tired of being asked if I have a WIC check when I go to buy baby formula for my daughter!! I guess it's just assumed that a person with bottles of formula is on WIC and that's sad. If you need it I understand, but the fact that it's the norm in this region upsets me. And I do know some people who work the system to get free baby food and actually don't qualify.
If a family is in a situation where a run of bad luck gets them down, they are trying, but are not able to make it, I can understand, but I see so many abuse the system, while the working-class folk foot the bill, yet cannot afford the services that the check-riders and slackers are given to (at our expense). If a body is able to work, then they should. If you are medically cleared to work and do not, you should starve (no help at all given). That may be a harsh view, but it's how I see it. A body gets tired of working hard and seeing their money go to some leech's hand.

I like taco bells new slogan "4th meal", just think of all these third world countries that are just trying to get that "1st meal".
"1st meal - in between working in the fields and sleep."
